Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI mode to recommend a plumber, an accountant or a marketing agency in a suburb, and look at the sources it shows. Most are not the businesses’ own websites. They are directories, review platforms, industry marketplaces and local news. Your site is the last thing the model trusts about you, and understanding why changes where the effort should go.
Why does AI trust third parties over your site?
For the same reason a careful buyer does. Your website is you describing yourself; every business on earth says it is trusted, professional and customer-focused, so the words carry no information. A directory listing is structured, consistent and comparable across thousands of businesses, which is exactly what a model needs to answer “who does X in Y”. A review is an independent account of what actually happened. When AI answers cite sources, they lean toward the ones that corroborate rather than the ones that claim.
What are the models actually reading?
Structured facts: name, address, phone, category, service area, hours, repeated identically across many places. Aggregated sentiment: how many reviews, how recent, what they mention. Comparison content: “best X in Y” lists, marketplace profiles with ratings, forum threads where real people name businesses. And, last, your own pages, mainly to confirm the facts and pull a description. If your details differ between your site, your directory listings and your review profiles, the model is less sure who you are, and an unsure model recommends someone else.
What should you do about it?
Make your business details identical everywhere. Same name, same address format, same phone, same website. This is dull, and it is the foundation. Our Local Visibility Audit checks it across the sources that matter.
Be present where the models look. The major local directories, the review platforms your customers already use, and the marketplaces specific to your industry. Not hundreds of spam directories; the twenty or thirty a human would actually consult.
Earn reviews that say what you did and where. “Great service” teaches a model nothing. “Replaced our switchboard in Cranbourne the same week, tidy and on quote” teaches it your service, your area and your reliability in one sentence.
Make your own site quotable. When the model does reach you, give it a first paragraph on each service page that answers what you do, for whom, where and roughly at what price. We covered the content side in being the answer.
How do you know if it is working?
Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, monthly, and record who they name and which sources they cite. When your directory profiles and review pages start appearing as sources, your own site usually follows within a few months. The testing method is in is AI recommending your business, and our AI visibility work tracks it as a standing report rather than a one-off check.
The uncomfortable part
A business with a beautiful website, no directory presence and eleven reviews from 2022 is close to invisible to AI recommendation, however good its work is. The fix is unglamorous: consistent listings, a steady flow of specific reviews, and profiles on the platforms your industry is judged on. It is the same work that moves the local map results, which is not a coincidence; the models learned what to trust from the same signals search did.
